Geneva: Canton Flag, Capital and Regional Profile
The canton of Geneva is located at the southwest end of Lake Geneva and is closely intertwined with France. The city of the same name is its main town, but forms only a municipality of the larger canton. The yellow-red flag with eagle and key stands for a political community whose local history and international role meet in a particularly narrow space.

The Flag of Geneva
The square flag is vertically divided. On the left a black half eagle appears on yellow, on the right a golden key. Crown, wing and key beard are striking details. The halves of the picture have different primary colors; it is therefore not a complete eagle in the middle of a monochrome field.
The combination of eagle and key is the decisive distinguishing feature of Geneva. Both figures belong to the historical heraldry of the place. In the quiz, it is enough to read their arrangement and colors carefully. An exact narrative of origin is not derived from the picture here; visible forms and historical meanings are different levels of information.
Geneva: Location and Territorial Role
The canton is located in the extreme southwest of Switzerland. In addition to the city of Geneva, its territory includes other municipalities and extends into more rural areas. It must therefore not be equated either with the urban area or with cross-border agglomeration. These three rooms perform different administrative and functional tasks.
The location at the end of the lake is determined by a valley between Jura, Vuache, Salève and Voirons. The connection to the rest of the Swiss cantonal area is comparatively narrow, while the border with France is long. Céligny also has a special location outside the contiguous main area. An accurate map illustrates this complicated neighborhood better than a single city map.
Landscape, History and Culture
The Rhône is a central orientation line of the Geneva area. The lowest point of the canton lies on its axis at Vers Vaux in the municipality of Chancy. The highest point, on the other hand, is at Monniaz in Jussy. Despite its compact form, the canton has different elevations and landscape references.
Geneva became the Swiss canton in 1815; today's outer contours were created in connection with the Treaties of Paris and Turin until 1816. The history of borders is therefore closely linked to the European reorganization process of that time. Since then, individual municipalities have changed without the city, canton and neighbouring region becoming a single administrative unit.
The Palais des Nations is located in Ariana Park, Geneva City. Originally built for the League of Nations, it now houses the United Nations Office in Geneva. This international level belongs to the cantonal profile, but does not replace its local political structure or everyday relations with neighbouring French territories.
Cross-border everyday life
The Geneva habitat extends beyond the French border and into the canton of Vaud. Cooperation shall cover, inter alia, mobility, the environment and urban development. The Léman Express is a vivid example of how a common functional space is connected by projects, although several states and administrations remain involved.
Palais des Nations
The building complex was created for the League of Nations and became an important place of international diplomacy. Its location in Ariana Park connects a large institutional location with a designed environment. The history of the House illustrates the transition from the interwar order to the work of the United Nations.
Canton and municipalities
The canton includes numerous municipalities with their own local profile. Jussy and Chancy appear at the extremes, while the city of Geneva is the political and international center. Such examples help to perceive Geneva as a regional area and not exclusively as a dense center on the lake.
