ITALIAN REGION

Lombardy: Regional Flag, Capital and Regional Profile

Lombardy connects Milan with Alpine spaces, large lakes and a rich history of art and design. Its green flag bears the white pink camuna, a modern-shaped sign with prehistoric reference. Between the rock paintings of the Valcamonica and Leonardo’s Supper, the cultural diversity of this northern Italian region is particularly well understood.

The Flag of Lombardy

On a strong green background stands a white, softly curved cross figure. Its four rounded arms form the stylized pink camuna. The sign looks like a contemporary logo, but has an archaeological reference. The flag shows neither a naturalistic rose with petals nor the city coat of arms of Milan.

The Rosa camuna was introduced in 1975 as a regional coat of arms. Her design goes back to a group around Bruno Munari with Bob Noorda, Roberto Sambonet and Pino Tovaglia. The motif is inspired by rock carvings of the Valcamonica. The green flag with a silver or white figure was legally adopted as the official regional flag in 2019.

Lombardy: Location and Territorial Role

Milan is the administrative center of the region, but it includes very different landscapes. In the north are alpine rooms and valleys. The large pre-Alpine lakes mediate between mountains and southern settlement areas. Its shapes and banks are important geographical reference points that exist alongside the image of the economically characterised metropolis.

Among the great lakes are Garda, Maggiore, Como, Iseo and Lugano. According to the Regional Environmental Agency, of these five, only Lake Como and Lake Iseo are entirely in Lombardy. Others are shared with neighbouring regions or Switzerland. Regional affiliation of a shore therefore does not automatically mean that the entire lake belongs to the same administrative area.

Landscape, History and Culture

The Valcamonica preserves an extraordinary collection of rock paintings. Agriculture, shipping, war and magical or ritual themes appear in the carved figures. UNESCO describes an image transmission that has grown over thousands of years. It reveals human activities and ideas without every single figure being able to be explained without any doubt today.

In Milan, Santa Maria delle Grazie is a World Heritage Site with Leonardo’s Supper. The painting is located on the north face of the monastic dining room. It is thus bound to a concrete architectural space and did not emerge as a movable panel for a later museum location. This spatial connection is part of its significance.

The Lombard flag connects prehistoric model and modern design particularly directly. It does not take over a complete rock drawing together with its original environment, but develops from it an easily reproducible sign. In this way, it stands for a conscious design approach to regional heritage, in which archaeological memory and institutional present come together visibly.

Rock paintings of the Valcamonica

Since 1979, the rock paintings of the Valcamonica have been on the World Heritage List. Their motives extend over a long period of time and numerous fields of activity. Those who look at it should distinguish between the contents of the picture, dating and present interpretation: an incised figure provides a finding, while the explanation of its meaning requires additional archaeological work.

Leonardo in the original place

Leonardo created the Last Supper after the UNESCO presentation between 1495 and 1497. The reactions of the apostles are grouped around a precise narrative moment. Architecture and painting can be viewed together because the painted room and the actual dining room are consciously related to each other and the work continues to stand at its original location.

Accurate assignment of lakes

The lake landscape is at the same time a natural space and a subject of official water monitoring. The Environmental Agency distinguishes natural lakes from artificial or heavily modified water bodies. This technical separation is a reminder that not every water surface with a similar appearance has the same history of origin or can be assessed in exactly the same way for environmental issues.
